Get Yourself Clear!

Get Yourself Clear

My friend Janet Attwood, author of The Passion Test, shared with me her philosophy on change.  She says:
When you are clear, what you want will show up in your life
But only to the extent that you are clear.

Being clear is one of the most important steps toward attaining what you want in life.  This can be a really difficult task for women.  Why?  Because we are givers and pleasers and many times spend much of our thinking and doing around the needs of others.  At the end of the day, we are too tired or drained from putting our energies in all the places we need to be that weariness takes over and there is nothing left to give to ourselves.

And that's where we are really coming from when we talk about striving for balance.  I talk a lot about balance in my book, Women Like Us:  Real Stories and Strategies for Living Your Best Life.  And I truly believe that you can't have balance without some clarity of what that looks like for you.

Below are some first steps for you to take toward creating clarity for yourself both personally and professionally.   Remember that you create your life FIRST in your mind and then you act on what you want and let the rest of the world in to see.

Let's get started:

1.  Determine where you are now emotionally.  Are you conducting your life with a feeling of disconnection?  Are you feeling physically inadequate?  Do you want a career change?
Spending some time writing down your random thoughts or talking with someone; a mentor, a friend, your husband or anyone who knows and cares about you will start bringing those thoughts to the surface.  You need to start the juices flowing.  There are several key phrases and suggestion exercises one can use to jump start your clarity.

2.  Getting clarity requires identifying what things are in your life that keep you from reaching your goals and dreams.  Is there a responsibility you could delegate to others or drop altogether?

3. Are there patterns or themes in your life that keep you from getting clear?  Perhaps these are dragging you away from focusing and realizing your goals?  Jane Atherton doesnt know how to say no.  Any request of her time from her mother, her husband, her friends, her neighborhood or anyone in her circle of influence is answered by her even when she doesn 't want to make all of these commitments.  Jane can't get clear on her own goals until she recognizes how many times she says 'yes' when she really wants to say 'no'.

4. Take a look at your habits.  Are your habits positioning you for success or failure?  Are there habits you have now that you could break and feel better about yourself?

5. Are there gaps in your life?  What are they?  Do you need more education?  Do you want a dynamic relationship?  Do you want to have time for creativity?

The answers to these questions can certainly get you started on reaching clarity for yourself.  Make an effort to answer these questions and see where the answers take you.

It can be hard to getting around to do this reflection, but so worth it. I recommend actually putting time in your diary to go somewhere quiet and work these questions, and actually write the answers down. I go through a similiar process at least every year. www.successfullyslim.com
