In 1887, the forefathers of Indianapolis came up with the idea of operating a natural gas company as a not-for-profit Public Charitable Trust, solely for the benefit of customers and the community. Today, this Trust lives on as Citizens Energy Group, a broad-based energy service company engaged in the following primary businesses:
- Citizens Gas - Local distribution company (LDC) transporting natural gas to nearly 266,000 customers in and around Indianapolis.
- Citizens Thermal – District steam heating and chilled water cooling provider serving business, institutional and industrial facilities across the Downtown Indianapolis area.
- Citizens Resources – Formerly, Citizens By-Products, a wholly-owned subsidiary engaging and investing in various energy-related businesses.
